Chamblee, Georgia sits in north DeKalb right off of I-285 and I-85. The area seems a little far removed from the hustle of Atlanta and adopts a slower pace than more urban communities. Chamblee is growing and expanding in size, bringing with it a diverse crowd seeking to put their personal touch on the area. When it comes to food, Union Hill Kitchen does just that.
Head Chef Alexis Hernandez describes Union Hill Kitchen as “Dining for the selective eclectic.” This describes his approach to American cuisine perfectly. Tucked right behind a nice high-rise apartment complex, Union Hill Kitchen shines brightly on the side of Peachtree Road. It’s bright orange sign and umbrellas of the same color immediately grabs for your attention.
Once inside, the restaurant continues to hold your attention with bright orange walls, modern Americana inspired art and small, but welcoming dining area. Union Hill Kitchen was recently featured in GA Voice and was the winner of Best New Chef, Best New Restaurant, Best Burger and Best Restaurant. I knew going into lunch that I was in for something special.
Joined by a couple of coworkers, we decided to all get different items on the menu, along with different sides, to get a better scope of what Union Hill Kitchen has to offer. I went in expecting to go straight for the Union Hill Burger. I mean, it just won the Best Burger award, so why would I not? Fish tacos, that’s why.
The fried tilapia is a perfect golden brown and topped with bright purple pineapple slaw, oven tomatoes, scallions and lettuce. I decided to upgrade my fries to “Blue”: hand cut fries topped with blue dressing, garlic oil, bacon and scallions. The food is as colorful as the restaurant. It is very clear that Chef Hernandez puts as much thought and effort into the colors of his dishes as the ingredients and flavors.
My coworkers and I pass around our plate, sharing a handmade mushroom and chicken pizza and fries covered in garlic, parmesan, and sriracha. Everything on our table was absolutely delicious. Fish tacos always grab my attention, but they don’t always live up to expectations. Tilapia has a tendency of being plain and just taking on whatever flavors are around it. Not Chef Alexis Hernandez’s fish tacos. Combining the perfect balance of textures and flavors, Union Hill Kitchen’s fish tacos are some of the best I’ve had in Metro Atlanta. Be warned, this dish is only available for a limited time.
After a collaborative decision, we decided that we need a few more bites of something sweet to go along with a spectacular lunch. Personally, I’m not a big dessert guy, but after having their pretzel coated chocolate brownie, I may have to change my mind. Topped with vanilla ice cream, it was the perfect balance of hot and cold with a hint of salty pretzel hidden in the chocolate.
This is a bit of a long-winded blog post to tell you that Union Hill Kitchen is absolutely worth a visit. Whether you are a local looking for a different dining option or passing through the city on I-285 or I-85, Union Hill Kitchen should be at the top of your list. Next time, I’ll be having the award winning burger.
