This little seafood gem is located in small Strip Mall on Buford Highway, known for its endless selection of international restaurants. You step up, order your food and have a seat in a mostly communal dining area. The ambiance is very casual with shared wooden picnic tables on painted, concrete floors. There are various beach décor items dotting the walls and ceiling. A classic song by Barry White was playing on the house stereo. However, most people come here specifically for the fresh seafood.
Crawfish Shack Seafood is not your typical seafood restaurant. Although it is obviously influenced by Louisiana Cajun food, Hieu Pham, owner, puts a twist on it with his Vietnamese-Cambodian background. His father was born in Vietnam and his mother in Cambodia, but is also a quarter Chinese. Pham was born in Atlanta and is a true Southern Georgian.
A variety of distinctly New Orleans products, from coffee to seasonings, are displayed prominently for purchase at the entrance area. You can even bring home a pound or two of their fresh seafood and prepare it in your own kitchen.
The restaurant is famous for their fried seafood, but their menu has a bit of everything to satisfy any seafood lover. I tried their Seafood Meal with 1 lb. of boiled crawfish, hush puppies, Cajun corn on the cob and cole slaw. The boiled crawfish were seasoned deliciously and very spicy. There really isn’t a good way to eat crawfish without getting a little messy, but that’s part of the fun. The sides like the Cajun Corn were also very, very tasty. It was a very filling and wonderful meal, to say the least.
Our team also tried the Fried Shimp Meal, which included extra large shrimp perfectly seasoned. Other meal options include Grouper, Snapper, Catfish and Tilapia. I heard their fried shrimp sandwiches and crab legs are awesome. I definitely want to try both on future visits. In addition to their legendary fried platters, they even have alligator tail on their menu! To wash it all down, try their signature fresh sugarcane drink.
We got there a little early before lunch and did not have much of a wait for our food. However, as the lunch hour approached, the line increased dramatically. This is obviously a very popular spot with local office workers. It’s no wonder as the food was so good and fresh. Crawfish Shack is definitely a place you will want to go back a second or third time…
