The first Arctic freeze may be over, but winter has just begun in the south. Staying holed up in your house or hotel during the freezing temperatures is enough to make anyone go crazy (The Shining, anyone?). If you are needing to get out, there are several coffee shops and tea shops in and around Atlanta’s DeKalb where you can go grab a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, defrost, and read a good book.
Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party
Located in Candler Park, Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party is just as eclectic as it sounds. Upside down umbrellas and lampshades hang overhead and the walls are either covered in books or painted bright colors. Dr. Bombay’s is the perfect spot to grab a hot tea or coffee (but we highly recommend the tea), grab a book off the shelf, and cozy up on one of the couches. And as an added bonus, if you like the book, pick it up and take it with you for $1.
Since 1993, Java Monkey has been pouring coffee for the Downtown Decatur community and its visitors. In a lot of ways, it still has that 90s feel to it. Once you walk inside, you almost expect to see the Friends’ gang sitting on the sofa. Java Monkey is dimly lit, warm, and plenty of places to get comfortable with your book or laptop. The coffee shop is open late and has live entertainment throughout the week. Stop in for a hot cup of coffee or a glass of wine after dinner.
Ink & Elm
Ink & Elm is one of the most unique spots in Metro Atlanta. Located in Emory Village, the restaurant is broken up into three distinct areas: A spacious dining room for dinner, a lounge for more intimate gatherings, and a cozy tavern for a more casual crowd. During one of the exceptionally frigid days, stop by the tavern during the day for some delicious Intelligentsia coffee, or a nice scotch at night.
Atlanta Tea Room
Drive up Peachtree Road, and then go just a little further to experience a very special cup of tea. The Atlanta Tea Room & Tea Shop has several awards, including Best Tea Room by Atlanta Magazine. Choose from over 160 teas from all over the world, with tea experts close by help you make the right choice. One of the coolest aspects that makes this teashop unique is their meditation room. Sign up for their special weekend workshops for meditation.
Kavarna is unique because it is a little bit of everything. It’s a coffee shop, a tavern, a music venue, and an exhibition space for the surrounding Oakhurst area. A true place for locals to gather, Kavarna is a great place to escape the cold weather and warm up with a cup of coffee or craft beer. Their hours are as lax as their identity, so check out the calendar, find a show or literary event, and stay warm!
