Having been to Nicaragua more than a few times, I have adopted an affinity for Central American cuisine. Rincon Latino serves up authentic, homemade dishes that include a wide range of Central American flavors along with favorites from Mexico. However, they are best known for their pupusas.
The restaurant is tucked in a shopping center at the corner of Buford Highway and Shallowford Road, just a few minutes from I-85. If you are looking for an authentic taste of Central America (with a strong influence from Honduras), this is the place for you.
My first impression was the restaurant was larger than expected. The dining area included a large sitting area with large booths with casual dining. I started off with some delicious appetizers including Chicharrones mixed with Yucca Frita over a bed of cabbage along with a plate of Platanos Maduros with sour cream. Everything tasted great and the Chicharrones are fried with the meat on top of the pork skin. I washed everything down with a cold glass of Agua de Maracuya (Passion Fruit), which was sweet and refreshing.
Rincon Latino is known for their pupusas, which are very popular throughout Central America. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla filled with cheese, pork meat or beans. I ordered Pupusas de Loroco con Queso and Revuelta. I haven’t had a pupusa for a long time, but they were larger than average and tasted wonderful.
I had to try the Bistek Guatemalteco, which is a Guatemalan-style steak, very different than similar Nicaraguan dishes that I am used to. They top the meat with red sauce with peppers and onions, accompanied with beans and rice. This plate is more than enough for one person and very satisfying.
Overall, the entire meal was totally delicious and filling. Service was quick and friendly. Rincon Latino is a great place for quick lunch or a full dinner and very affordable. I will definitely be back.
