The General Muir: A New York Jewish Deli in Emory Point

DSC_0031The General Muir Deli is a tribute to a classic New York Jewish deli located at Emory Point, not far from Emory University.  The restaurant is named for the refugee transport ship that brought co-owner Jennifer Johnson’s mother and grandparents, Holocaust survivors, to New York in 1949.

On my recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this restaurant is much larger in scale than I anticipated.  The ambiance is casual-upscale with the traditional look and feel of a New York City deli.

As you enter the restaurant, there is a small area at the far end named, “The Deli at The General Muir,” which serves bagels, sandwiches, salads, pastries, and coffee throughout the day. The deli is perfect for people on-the-go who are looking for a quick snack for the road.

Near the entrance way, there is a lunch counter to sit down and grab a quick bite.  I dined in the full service area, which includes table dining for groups of friends or families.

The General Muir Deli serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, and offers an espresso bar serving locally-roasted Batdorf & Bronson coffee as well as a full bar of wine, beer, spirits, and cocktails.

Their lunch menu includes a variety of sandwiches included Roasted Turkey, Reuben, Double Burger Stack, Vegetarian Reuben and Chicken Club as well as their popular Pastrami Sandwich.  Soups and salads are available to accompany your meal.

I had the Roast Beef Sandwich with purple Onion Rings, Arugula, Tomato and Blue Chees Aioli.  It was very filling and satisfying. I also ordered a side of fries that were cooked to perfection.

Dinner options include Matzoh Ball Soup, Chopped Liver, Swiss Chard Fritters and Tuscan Kale & Castelluccio Lentils among others. Pastries include traditional favorites such as Bagels, classic Cheesecake, Layer Cakes, Black & White Cookies, Rugelach, Chocolate Babka, Danish, Cinnamon Rolls and Sticky Buns.

The General Muir Deli is located at 1540 Avenue Place, Suite B-230, Atlanta, GA 30329.  For more information, visit or call 678-927-9131.
